News: The Tudor Black Bay Goes Ceramic
The Black Bay is a watch that needs no introduction. It’s pretty hot stuff right now—and that’s mostly thanks to how diverse the collection is. You want a dive watch? Sure, have a regular ol’ Black Bay. A GMT? Tudor has you covered. A chronograph? Yep. How about something in an exotic material? Bronze, silver, gold … “what about ceramic?” Funny you ask. They do now. Introducing the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic.
Ceramic is an incredibly brittle material, which makes it hard to work with. The advantages of using ceramic, however, far outweigh the challenges of manufacturing. Ceramic—for those that don't know—is scratch-resistant. This, coupled with the domed sapphire crystal of the Black Bay, makes the watch incredibly hard to scratch—saving its wearer from a few of those dreaded dinks.
At this stage in the article, you might be thinking: “so, it’s just a Black Bay in ceramic”—and while you would be right, it is, there is still more to this Black Bay than you would think. The eagle-eyed of you will have noticed the addition of “Master Chronometer” on the dial—and that’s the other thing that makes this Black Bay unique.
Flipping over this 41mm watch reveals the all-new, in-house, METAS certified, Master Chronometer Calibre MT5602-1U. Spec-wise it’s sort of what you would expect. A decent power reserve of 70 hours and a beat rate of 28,800 vph. What you don’t expect to find, however, is a resistance in magnetism up to 15,000-gauss—and that’s thanks to the requirements of METAS.
The Calibre MT5602-1U is a truly tried and tested movement. See for yourself, Click here to find out what a watch needs to do to become METAS certified.
So, there you have it, a Black Bay in Ceramic. You have to hand it to Tudor for this one. They could have just released this watch in ceramic, but no, they made it even more unique by completely redesigning its movement to gain a METAS Master Chronometer certification. Well played Tudor, well played.
